According to AXIOS, The Kyiv Independent, and The Guardian, the Zelensky government and the U.S. are reportedly nearing an agreement that would grant the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral wealth in exchange for "security guarantees" as part of a broader peace deal to end the war with Russia.
Reports of the negotiations come amid growing U.S. pressure on Ukraine to seek an end to the conflict. One unnamed Ukrainian official told The Associated Press that the deal would amount to "a colonial agreement."
The U.S. has long viewed Ukraine’s mineral wealth as a strategic asset. Before Trump’s presidency, Senator Lindsey Graham—a staunch Trump ally—publicly advocated for securing Ukraine’s mineral resources as compensation for U.S. military support.
However, much of Ukraine’s mineral wealth is no longer under its control. Large portions of these resources now lie within Russian-occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk, which declared independence early in the war.
Credible reports suggest that the AFU is launching attacks to recapture key mining sites, particularly coal reserves essential for steel production—an industry crucial for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
As Ukraine’s struggle continues, Western leaders, including Canada’s, reaffirm their commitment to supporting Ukraine in achieving a "just settlement and a livable peace." However, such a settlement was on the table both before and after the war began, only to be rejected by political forces—both domestic and foreign—pursuing different agendas. These competing interests have led to Ukraine’s current tragedy, leaving the country torn apart.
